The Marsh cesspool cesspit tank is a covered, watertight unit for storing raw household sewage. It has no outlet and relies on road transport for the removal of raw sewage. No biological treatment is involved.
Modern environmental regulations either discourage or ban the use of cesspools (Cesspools are not permitted in Scotland), and instead connections to municipal sewage systems or package sewage treatment plants are encouraged or required.
In many countries, planning and development regulations for the protection of the environment prevent home-owners who live close to rivers and environmentally sensitive areas from installing a cesspit or septic system, requiring a sewage treatment plant instead.
